Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States and was founded on July 16,1790. The city of Washington was once a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871 combined the City and Territory into one entity called the District of Columbia, which is why the city is known as Washington, D.C. The District has a population of about 600,000 but rises to over one million during the workweek because of commuters from the surrounding areas. The District is a part of the Washington Metropolitan Area, the ninth largest metropolitan area in the country.

Many of the nation's monuments and museums as well as all three branches of the federal government of the United States are located in the District. It is home to 174 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of the World Bank, the Organization of American States (OAS), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Also located in the District are the headquarters of other institutions such as trade unions, lobbying groups, law firms, professional associations, independent contractors, and industry trade groups.

With its growing, diversified economy, it is continually increasing its percentage of professional and business service jobs.
